This part details the years of exile in the Dandakaranya forest, where the trio visits various sages and lives a simple life. The pivotal conflict begins with the demoness Surpanakha, who, after being rejected by Ram and Lakshman, attacks Sita. In retaliation, Lakshman cuts off her nose and ears. She then seeks revenge from her brothers, Khara and Dushana, who are killed by Ram. Finally, Surpanakha approaches her most powerful brother, the king of Lanka, Ravana, who, captivated by Sita's beauty, abducts her using the magical deer Maricha as a decoy.
